HTC and Samsung Electronics introduced new flagship models for 2013, the HTC One and Galaxy S4, in April. Both firms believe May sales of the new flagship models will exceed the monthly sales of previous generation of flagship models in the first month after launch. In addition, HTC and Samsung both expressed confidence to top Taiwan smartphone sales in May.
However, HTC has been experiencing component shortages causing a delay in shipments.
Jack Tong, president of HTC North Asia, has stated the firm aims to achieve its target for sufficient supply of HTC One to prevent consumers from waiting.
Tong disclosed that sales of HTC smartphones in the Taiwan's high-end market, above NT$15,000/unit (US$499/unit), have been strong and sales of HTC Butterfly have been steady. Overall, May sales of HTC smartphones in Taiwan are growing.
Meanwhile, Andy Tu, president of mobile communications at Samsung Taiwan, said the firm is optimistic about sales of Galaxy S4 in May.
Tu added that market conditions in Taiwan were not strong in April as some consumers waited for new models to be launched. However, sales showed significant growth in the first-half of May compared to April.
According to sources, sales of Galaxy S3 in the first month after the launch were around 670,000 units in Taiwan and May sales of Galaxy S4 are predicted to surpass this figure.
