大陸將積極開採頁岩天然氣

大陸將在四川等長江上游地區，以「水壓斷裂法」從頁岩區開採天然氣，以提高能源安全，並減少燃煤用量，及緩和城市的霾害。但地質學家認為該區原本就地震頻繁，此而舉將使當地發生地震的風險更加提高。

大陸頁岩天然氣的蘊藏量約是美國的兩倍。美國靠開採頁岩油、氣，估計到2020年時將使國內生產毛額每年增加6900億美元，並創造170萬個就業機會。現在中國正效法美國的作法。

長江上游地區的頁岩天然氣蘊藏量，估計占全大陸的40%。大陸的目標是2015年時能生產65億立方呎的頁岩天然氣，2020年時擴大到1千億立方呎。

殼牌石油公司計劃在大陸投資10億美元，與大陸的中國石油公司合資生產頁岩天然氣。
