歐巴馬19日說，吸大麻是「懷習慣」、「惡習」，但法律對吸大麻的懲罰大多落在少數族裔身上，他表示美國目前計畫將大麻合法化的幾個州應該實現計畫。《紐約客》雜誌引述他的話說，他小時吸大麻，大麻和他成年後抽了相當長時間的菸沒有什麼非常不同之處，「我認為它並不比酒精危險」。他說，他告訴兩個女兒，吸大麻「是壞點子，浪費時間，而且不太健康」，但吸大麻被抓被罰的絕大多數是少數族裔，「有一點很重要：一個社會不應該有大多數人偶爾違法，卻只有特定少數族裔為此愛罰」。
